Deciduous tree belonging to the elm family (Ulmaceae). This tree species is native to Japan, Korea, China and Taiwan and is valued for its graceful growth habit and beautiful fall colours.
The Japanese pseudoelm is a medium to large tree that usually reaches a height of 15-25 meters. It has a broad, dome-shaped crown with branches that hang down. The bark is smooth and grey-brown in colour. Here the leaves are simple, oval-shaped and have an asymmetrical leaf base and a pointed tip.
This tree species has some similarity to elms but is not a close relative. It is also much less susceptible to Dutch elm disease and is often planted as an ornamental tree because of its attractive shape and autumn colours.
