The Osmanthus heterophyllus is an evergreen shrub within the genus Osmanthus that is also known as the holly-leaved false holly. This plant is known for its striking leaves and is a popular ornamental shrub in gardens and landscapes.
The leaves are very similar to those of holly: leathery, shiny and with toothed edges. The leaf colour varies from dark green to even more blue green. Flowers of this false holly are slightly less striking than other species in its family. They are usually white and have a pleasant smell.
Growth form of the heterophyllus is compact and dense. The shrub can grow up to 3 meters high depending on conditions and thrives in well-drained, moist and fertile soil. It prefers a sunny to semi-shady position but can adapt to different light conditions.
Because of its striking leaves, the holly-leaved false holly is often used as an ornamental shrub, both as a solitary plant and in hedges. It can also be shaped and pruned to create decorative shapes.
