A fruit-bearing tree belonging to the mulberry family and known for its unique foliage and delicious edible figs. The leaves are large, lobed and palmate. They have a dark green colour and the characteristic shape is very recognizable.
There are several varieties of fig trees, each with subtle differences in fruit size, colour and flavour. They may require pruning to maintain good shape and structure, as well as to promote fruit formation. Figs have a long history of cultivation and consumption and are mentioned in ancient texts and scriptures.
In addition to the edible figs, the fig tree also has flowers, but these are inconspicuous on the inside of the fruit. They are not often seen because the fruits tend to grow directly from the flower buds.
